Gunmen Abduct Students, Teachers In Attack On Niger School

Gunmen have attacked St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State and abducted an unconfirmed number of students. The attackers reportedly arrived in large numbers between 3 and 4 a.m., riding on more than 60 motorcycles and accompanied by a van. Witnesses said the school’s gatekeeper was shot and left with serious injuries.

Community sources said both students and some teachers were taken during the incident at the Catholic boarding school. Some residents fear that the number of abducted individuals could exceed 100, although authorities are yet to confirm the figures. The incident has left families and community members deeply distressed as they await official information on the scale of the abductions.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack and said tactical units, military components and other security operatives had been deployed to the area. Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun said a search operation was under way in surrounding forests to secure the safe rescue of the kidnapped students. Commissioner of Police Adamu Elleman urged residents to remain calm and support ongoing operations with credible information.
