MI Abaga speaks on pressure of broke-shaming

Nigerian rapper Jude MI Abaga has spoken out against what he described as a widespread culture of broke shaming in the country. Speaking on the WithChude podcast, he said many Nigerians face constant judgment based on their perceived financial status, a pressure that can push people into unnecessary strain.

He explained that he made a personal decision early in his career not to succumb to such pressure. Abaga said allowing the fear of judgment to dictate one’s behaviour gives others undue power and can lead to repeated attempts to meet unrealistic expectations.

The rapper noted that the fear of being judged often becomes a trap, causing individuals to adjust their lifestyle to satisfy external perceptions. He added that many Nigerians are deeply concerned about how they are viewed, even though most people statistically do not have much money.

Abaga, who is 44, said it took time to develop the mental resilience needed to ignore such comments. He added that broke shaming is not personal but part of wider societal behaviour, warning that people can go bankrupt trying to prove a point to others.
