Nigeria’s Parliament Holds Security Summit as Foreign Delegations Attend

Senate Moves to Ban Child Soldiers as Armed Forces Bill Passes Second Reading

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has opened a special plenary session on national security, admitting delegations from St Kitts and Nevis and the United States Embassy. Lawmakers are expected to receive a consolidated internal assessment covering security incidents, trends and oversight findings, alongside presentations from defence, intelligence, police, human rights and emergency-response committees. A formal resolution outlining actions and timelines will follow.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said Nigeria’s sovereignty “is not negotiable” and welcomed cooperation with the United States, noting ongoing work on the Religious Freedom Accountability Bill. He warned that both Christian and Muslim communities have been targeted by armed groups and highlighted the rise of military coups in West Africa.

The session comes amid nationwide outrage over mass abductions and escalating violence, concerns recently echoed in a US congressional hearing on Nigeria’s security challenges.
