IPOB Rebuts Senator Kalu Over Claim Linking Group to 30,000 Deaths

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra has strongly criticised Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over comments attributing more than 30,000 deaths in the South East to the group and its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the allegation as false and misleading, insisting it misrepresents its activities and longstanding non-violent stance.

The group argued that insecurity in the region stems from broader political and security failures, not its agitation. It also accused unnamed political actors of exploiting such claims for advantage and warned that inflammatory remarks risk heightening tensions.

IPOB reiterated its call for an independent investigation into violence since 2015 and urged due process in Mr. Kanu’s ongoing legal matters. Senator Kalu has yet to respond.
