Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Demands Probe Into Delayed Justice for Abused Kogi Schoolgirl

The Nigerian Senate has been asked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, following a petition presented by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

She told lawmakers that attempts were being made to shield those accused of abusing the schoolgirl, who died in 2018 after complications linked to years of sexual assault.

Miss Ochanya, a student of the Federal Government Girls College in Gboko, reportedly suffered prolonged abuse while living with relatives. The senator said justice had been repeatedly delayed due to alleged interference, intimidation of witnesses and efforts to downplay the case.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, which is expected to review the case and recommend next steps.
