A former Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Idris Wase, has claimed that suspected Boko Haram members and other criminals were once found on recruitment lists for the Army and police. Speaking during a special plenary on national security, Mr. Wase warned that infiltration of security institutions poses a grave threat, adding that his colleague Muktar Betara could verify the incidents.
Mr. Wase, who has lost close relatives to terrorism, said the North Central region bears more than half of the country’s insecurity burden. He urged lawmakers to stop endorsing candidates with questionable backgrounds for security roles.

Contributions from regional caucuses painted a grim picture, with lawmakers from the North-West and North-East calling for combined security, governance and economic reforms. Others criticised past governments for lacking the political will to confront armed groups.
