Over 11,000 Police Officers Recalled From VIP Duties as Nigeria Shifts Focus to Community Security

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, says 11,566 police personnel have been withdrawn from VIP protection duties following a presidential directive aimed at strengthening frontline security nationwide. Speaking at a strategic officers’ conference on Thursday, he confirmed that the redeployed officers are already being posted to underserved and vulnerable communities.

Egbetokun described the decision as a deliberate realignment of policing priorities, driven by Nigeria’s current security demands rather than sentiment. He said the policy reaffirms the Force’s core mandate: protecting citizens, securing communities and maintaining public order.

According to him, the move will boost police visibility, expand investigative capacity and improve protection in rural and high-risk areas. He added that shifting officers from personalised security roles to public safety duties will produce more meaningful nationwide security outcomes.
