Stakeholders have cautioned that Nigeria’s development will continue to lag unless deliberate and sustained efforts are made to close widening gaps in women’s empowerment, financial inclusion, access to information and political participation.
The warning was issued in Abuja at the fifth anniversary of the Prudent Women Multipurpose Society and the unveiling of 100 Prudent Women: A Compendium of the Most Inspirational Biographies. Speakers noted that Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful progress if half of its population remains marginalised.
Gender advocate and UN Women consultant Hansatu Adegbite identified information, resource and skills gaps as the major barriers limiting women. She said many government programmes exist but women often lack awareness or access, while available resources remain insufficient.

Halima Usman, founder of the Halima Factor Community Initiative, said the rapid growth of women’s cooperatives reflects the absence of reliable support structures. Prudent Women founder, Msurshima Comfort Chenge, said the organisation’s five-year journey shows both progress and persistent challenges as it expands into economic, emotional and spiritual support.
