Over 1,000 Dead as Floods and Landslides Devastate Southeast Asia

More than 1,000 people have been killed across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia following days of tropical storms that triggered widespread flooding and landslides. Thousands remain affected as rescue and relief efforts intensify in the hardest-hit communities.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in North Sumatra on Monday, emphasising that the government’s immediate priority is delivering urgent aid. He said several isolated villages were still awaiting assistance, adding that helicopters and aircraft were being deployed to reach them.

Prabowo faces mounting pressure to declare a national emergency as Indonesia alone has recorded at least 502 deaths, with hundreds more still missing. Unlike Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prabowo has yet to publicly request international support.

Indonesia has dispatched two hospital ships and three warships loaded with supplies to devastated regions where roads remain largely impassable. In Sungai Nyalo village, receding floodwaters left homes and crops buried in thick grey mud, though many residents chose to stay behind.
