UK MP Tulip Siddiq Sentenced to Two Years in Absentia in Bangladesh Corruption Case

Labour MP and former UK minister Tulip Siddiq has been sentenced in absentia to two years in prison by a Bangladeshi court over corruption allegations she strongly denies. Siddiq was tried alongside 16 others and found guilty of influencing her aunt, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to secure a plot of land for her family near Dhaka. She rejected the verdict as “flawed and farcical,” insisting she has been targeted by “dirty politics” in Bangladesh.

Siddiq, who lives in London, is unlikely to serve the sentence and maintains she is not a Bangladeshi citizen, disputing prosecutors’ claims that she held a passport and ID. The case is one of several launched by authorities since Hasina’s removal and exile in India.

A Labour spokesperson said the party does not recognise the judgment, citing concerns from senior legal experts who argue Siddiq was denied access to a fair process. Siddiq continues to face multiple outstanding charges.
