ECOWAS sends standby troops to secure Benin’s government following mutiny

In response to the attempted coup in Benin Republic, ECOWAS has ordered the immediate deployment of its regional standby force to reinforce constitutional order in the country.

The force will include troops from Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone and is mandated to support the Beninese army in preserving the country’s territorial integrity and democratic institutions.

Gunfire had broken out around the residence of President Patrice Talon, and armoured vehicles loyal to mutineers had briefly seized state television in what the soldiers described as a takeover under the banner of a “Military Committee for Refoundation.”

But loyal security forces restored control hours later, and ECOWAS’s swift intervention shows the bloc’s resolve to deter unconstitutional changes of government in West Africa.
