Australia Enforces New Social Media Age Law

Australia Enforces New Social Media Age Law

Australia’s new law requiring social media platforms to verify users’ ages has officially taken effect. The law was enforced on Tuesday and is considered the first of its kind in the world.

The regulation requires major platforms to confirm whether users are under sixteen and restrict access for younger children. The government said the measure was created to protect minors from harmful online content.

Tech companies that fail to comply could face significant penalties. Several platforms said they are still developing tools to meet the requirements.

The Australian government plans to review the law’s impact after its first year of implementation.
