Nearly 1,000 Killed as Devastating Floods Hit Indonesia

Nearly 1,000 people have been confirmed dead in Indonesia’s devastating floods, with authorities reporting 990 fatalities and more than 220 people still missing. The disaster struck Sumatra’s northwestern region, where days of severe tropical storms and monsoon rains triggered landslides and flash floods.

In Aceh province, one of the worst affected areas, residents continue to struggle as homes and communities remain buried under mud and debris. Frustration is mounting over the pace of relief efforts, with survivors telling reporters they have received little help and are battling worsening conditions nearly two weeks after the floods.

Local officials said many communities are now facing outbreaks of illness, including skin infections and respiratory problems, as stagnant water and mud hamper cleanup efforts. Aceh’s governor, Muzakir Munaf, announced that the emergency response will be extended by another two weeks to allow more time for rehabilitation and urgent repairs.

Indonesia’s disaster agency estimates the cost of rebuilding could reach more than 51 trillion rupiah. The government has so far declined suggestions to call for international assistance despite the scale of destruction.
