Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar has met with Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Olushegun Adjadi Bakar in Abuja to discuss regional security concerns following the recent attempted coup in the Republic of Benin. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States.
Both ministers reviewed the implications of the coup attempt and highlighted the close ties between Nigeria and Benin. Tuggar said much of Nigeria’s insecurity is influenced by external factors and stressed that developments in one country inevitably affect the other, making coordinated regional action essential.
Bakar said the events in Benin demonstrated that democracy remains resilient in Africa. He thanked Nigeria and ECOWAS for their rapid support, explaining that Benin requested Nigerian troops for precise aerial assistance to target coup plotters positioned in a sensitive area without harming civilians.
