Flash Floods Kill at Least 37 in Morocco’s Safi Region

Flash floods have killed at least 37 people in Morocco’s coastal Safi region, local authorities report. Torrential rain on Sunday swept cars and debris through the city’s main port, while at least 70 homes were inundated in the old city centre.

Dozens of residents are receiving treatment in hospitals for injuries sustained during the floods. Some roads remain blocked due to damage and debris, limiting access to and from the city.

Moroccan authorities have launched search and rescue missions, which are still ongoing, as residents call for urgent government assistance to remove floodwaters. The country has experienced seven consecutive years of drought, which has depleted reservoirs, contributing to the impact of the sudden downpour.

The Moroccan weather service warns that rainfall is expected to continue on Tuesday, along with snowfall across the Atlas Mountains. Experts note that the extreme weather fluctuations are partly linked to the global climate crisis.
