Nigeria has recorded a sharp increase in the use of primary healthcare facilities between 2023 and 2025, and a concurrent decline in maternal and newborn deaths, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate. He disclosed this during an interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk.

Mr Pate said more than 80 million visits were recorded at federally supported primary healthcare centres in the first half of 2025, compared with about 20 million visits in 2023. He credited the increase to improved access to basic and preventive health services, including immunisation, antenatal care and treatment of common illnesses.

The health minister said national health insurance coverage has increased to more than 21 million people, up from fewer than 16 million at the start of the current administration. He said the government aims to expand coverage further, while continuing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare services across the country.
