President Tinubu urges governors to back state police and council autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to support the creation of state police and the full implementation of local government autonomy. He made the call at the 14th meeting of the All Progressives Congress National Caucus in Abuja on Thursday, against the backdrop of rising security challenges across Nigeria.

The president asked governors to uphold the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy, saying allocations to councils must be paid directly to them. He said court rulings alone were not sufficient without proper implementation. Mr Tinubu also directed the Minister of Interior to work with the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to replace affected police personnel with NSCDC officers.

Mr Tinubu further called for greater inclusion of women in the APC National Caucus to promote gender balance within the party. The meeting was attended by party leaders and governors from across the country.
