PenCom to launch health insurance scheme for retirees in March 2026

Nigeria’s pension assets rises to N26.09 trillion

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced plans to launch a health insurance initiative for low-income retirees, called PenCare, in March 2026. The pilot phase will target about 30,000 retirees across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran disclosed the plan at the 2025 PenCom media conference in Lagos. She said the initiative is aimed at ensuring retirement is a period of peace, rather than one burdened by medical expenses.

The scheme will provide free health insurance for retirees under the contributory pension scheme and is supported by a board of trustees set up to drive the intervention. Oloworaran described PenCare as a landmark reform aligned with the federal government’s ‘renewed hope’ agenda.

The commission said it will work with stakeholders to guarantee transparency, sustainability, and fair access for all eligible retirees, marking an expansion of pension industry services beyond monthly financial benefits.
