UNICEF Warns of Severe Child Malnutrition in North Darfur

A United Nations team visiting Sudan’s city of El-Fasher for the first time since its capture by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in October described the area as a “crime scene,” reporting few residents and widespread destruction. Over 100,000 people fled following the RSF takeover, with survivors citing ethnically motivated killings and mass detentions.

UNICEF warned of alarming levels of child malnutrition in North Darfur, with more than half of children screened acutely malnourished and one in six suffering severe, life-threatening conditions. The UN highlighted the humanitarian crisis affecting an estimated 30.4 million Sudanese.

Satellite imagery and research from Yale University indicate the RSF attempted to erase evidence of mass killings through burial, burning, and removal of human remains. Recent RSF attacks in the Dar Zaghawa region have killed over 200 civilians and further restricted escape routes to Chad.

El-Fasher’s fall allowed the RSF to consolidate control over Darfur, while fighting has spread to the Kordofan region, splitting Sudan. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire as the conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed more than 100,000 people and displaced 14 million, including 4.3 million fleeing abroad.
