25 People Dead as Overcrowded Boat Capsizes in Yobe

25 People Dead as Overcrowded Boat Capsizes in Yobe

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead and 14 others are missing after a boat capsized in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, YOSEMA, said the incident happened around 7pm on Saturday while the canoe was travelling from Adiyani town in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Garbi town in Nguru.

YOSEMA said the boat was carrying 52 passengers, mostly farmers and traders, when it capsized midway. Thirteen people were rescued alive, while search and rescue operations involving security agencies, emergency responders and local community volunteers are continuing for the missing passengers.

The agency said its teams from Bade and Nguru had been deployed to the area, adding that Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed that immediate medical and logistical support be provided to survivors. YOSEMA said further updates would be released as rescue efforts continue.
