The United States has suspended all assistance to the government of Somalia, accusing officials of destroying a World Food Programme warehouse containing US funded food aid. The Trump administration alleges that 76 metric tonnes of donor-funded food meant for vulnerable Somalis were seized by government officials.
The announcement was made in a social media post linked to the US State Department’s Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs and Religious Freedom. It said Washington has a zero-tolerance policy for the waste, theft or diversion of life-saving aid, and described the alleged actions as unacceptable. Somali authorities have not yet responded to the claims.

The US State Department said any resumption of assistance would depend on the Somali Federal Government taking responsibility and implementing corrective measures.
