Protests fuelled by foreign elements, Iran alleges, warns US against intervention

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused foreign elements of escalating nationwide protests into violence to create an excuse for potential US military intervention. Araghchi said the unrest, which has entered its third week, is now under control, adding that authorities have evidence of weapons being distributed to protesters and confessions from detainees will soon be released.

The demonstrations began over rising living costs but have expanded into a nationwide challenge to the government. Iranian state media report 109 security personnel have died, while opposition sources suggest the number of civilian casualties is higher. A nationwide internet blackout has entered its fourth day, limiting the spread of protest footage.

US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington is considering “strong options,” including military intervention, in response to the unrest. Iranian leaders, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, have warned that any attack on Iran would target US bases and Israel.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to address economic issues while blaming the US and Israel for fuelling unrest. Pro-government rallies continue in several cities, while security forces maintain a strong presence in protest hotspots.
