Two killed, wedding guests abducted in bandit attack in Katsina

Suspected bandits have attacked a wedding convoy at Unguwar Nagunda community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least two people. The attack happened on Sunday night, with several others, including the bride, reported injured, while an unspecified number of wedding guests were abducted.

A security source said residents reported heavy gunfire and panic as the attackers arrived, adding that families were still trying to determine the number of people taken away. The Katsina State Police Command has not commented on the issue.

The attack comes amid controversy over the Katsina State Government’s plan to facilitate the release of 70 detained suspected bandits as part of a peace arrangement with armed groups in affected communities. The government says the initiative has helped secure the release of about 1,000 abducted persons across the state.

An official letter dated January 2 and marked secret, signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Abdur-Rahman Umar, requested the Chief Judge, Justice Musa Abubakar, to support the release of suspects facing trial under the peace deal. The state government maintains that the move is aimed at sustaining peace accords reached with what it describes as repentant bandits.
