The Academic Staff Union of Universities says the newly signed agreement with the Federal Government could prevent strikes for at least three years if fully implemented. The agreement was signed and unveiled on Wednesday as part of efforts to improve the quality and stability of Nigeria’s university education system.
Speaking in a TV interview, the President of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the deal contains measurable commitments that can be monitored to address issues before they escalate. He said the union hopes there will be no strike within the lifespan of the agreement until it is reviewed again.
Professor Piwuna said the agreement establishes an Implementation Monitoring Team to be domiciled at the National Universities Commission and coordinated by the office of the NUC Executive Secretary. He said the committee will ensure that all terms of the pact are respected and properly followed up by both parties.

He confirmed that the long-disputed 2009 agreement has now been replaced by the new 2025 pact. According to him, all future references for implementation will be based on the 2025 agreement, while older agreements, including that of 1992, will only serve as historical guides.
