European Troops Arrive Greenland Amid Dispute with US

European troops from France, Germany and other countries have begun arriving in Greenland to strengthen security on the Arctic island, following talks that exposed sharp differences between the United States and its European allies. France has deployed 15 soldiers, while Germany has sent 13 personnel, with Norway and Sweden also taking part in the mission.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the first French military units were already en route, with others to follow. French authorities confirmed that soldiers from a mountain infantry unit had arrived in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, describing the two day mission as a demonstration of the European Union’s ability to deploy forces rapidly if required.

Germany’s Ministry of Defence said it was sending a reconnaissance team to Greenland, as Denmark announced plans to boost its own military presence. The move came as the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance in Washington to discuss President Donald Trump’s stated interest in taking control of the semiautonomous territory.
