The Nigerian passport has been ranked 89th out of 199 countries in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, according to data released in January by Henley and Partners. The index is based on exclusive information from the International Air Transport Authority and expert analysis of global travel access.
Nigeria shares the 89th position with Myanmar, with a visa free score of 44 destinations. The ranking covers destinations where holders can travel without a visa, obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authorisation.
Last July, Nigeria recorded its highest ranking in five years at 88th place, before slipping to 94th by the end of 2025. In Africa, the Nigerian passport ranks above only the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Libya and Eritrea.
