US mourns Plateau imam who sheltered Christians during attacks

The United States mission in Nigeria has expressed condolences over the death of Abdullahi Abubakar, the Muslim cleric who sheltered hundreds of Christians during the 2018 attacks in Plateau State. Mallam Abubakar, the chief imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, died at the age of ninety two.

In a statement, the US mission described him as a fearless advocate for religious tolerance with a long record of outreach across faiths. It said his actions demonstrated interfaith coexistence and harmony, adding that his legacy of peace would continue to inspire people in Nigeria and beyond. Mallam Abubakar gained international recognition after protecting about three hundred Christians who fled violence in his community.
