World Bank approves $12 million loan for Nigerian states hosting IDPs

Intra-African Trade Key to Ending Hunger, Says World Bank

The World Bank has approved a $12 million loan for Nigerian states hosting internally displaced persons (IDP) camps under the ‘Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project’. The funding is part of a broader $300 million concessional credit from the International Development Association.

Disbursement of the loan is performance-based, requiring states to register and profile IDPs, conduct demographic and vulnerability assessments, and provide verified results over three years. States must also implement governance, asset management, and integration measures to qualify for payments.

Tier 1 states with over 150,000 IDPs and Tier 2 states with at least 100,000 IDPs are eligible, with funds spread across successive milestones, including the provision of legal documentation and development programmes for displaced persons. Failure to meet targets allows the World Bank to withhold or reallocate funds.

The loan carries long-term concessional financing, with principal repayments beginning in 2031 and continuing until 2050. The World Bank remains Nigeria’s largest single creditor, accounting for over 41 percent of the country’s external debt.
