Malawi hikes petrol and diesel prices by over 40%

Malawi’s energy regulator has increased petrol and diesel prices by more than 40 percent, marking the second fuel hike in four months. The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority said the previous fixed pricing system was unsustainable and led to significant losses.

Diesel prices have risen by 41.3 percent and petrol by 41.9 percent, pushing cumulative increases under President Peter Mutharika to 80 percent and 95 percent, respectively, since he returned to power in October. The hike comes as the government seeks to stabilise fuel supply, electricity services, and road maintenance funding.

The regulator has moved to an automatic pricing system where fuel costs now reflect shipping and operational expenses. Following the announcement, transport fares have already surged and prices of essential goods are expected to rise across the country.

Many Malawians have expressed concern that the fuel increase could worsen the cost-of-living crisis and undermine efforts to revive the economy. Civil society groups warned that fuel is a basic commodity and any increase has a cascading effect on living costs.
