A Jigawa State farmers and herders special court has ordered nine cattle herders to pay N500 million in compensation to farmers whose crops were destroyed in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday by the presiding judge, Yusuf Abubakar, who cited provisions of the Penal Code in reaching the decision.
The defendants were prosecuted by the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police after more than two years of legal proceedings. The court found that the herders unlawfully allowed their cattle to stray into cultivated farmlands in the Kwarsa, Larau and Tukuda forest areas, causing extensive damage to crops, in violation of section 97 of the Penal Code.

The judge also held the herders responsible for burning a tractor tyre and a motorcycle belonging to the state chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria and for causing bodily harm to some farmers. In addition to the N500 million compensation awarded to the affected farmers, the court ordered the defendants to pay N500,000 for the destruction of property and granted them 30 days to appeal the judgment.
