More than one million electricity customers across the United States have been left without power as a powerful winter storm brings heavy snow, freezing rain and dangerously low temperatures. Over 10,000 flights were cancelled on Sunday, with thousands more delayed, as the storm spread across large parts of the country.
The National Weather Service said the storm is expected to sweep across the eastern two-thirds of the United States, with heavy snow forecast from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast and severe ice accumulation from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Mid Atlantic and Southeast. States worst affected include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia and Alabama.

US President Donald Trump approved federal emergency disaster declarations after nearly 20 states and the District of Columbia declared weather emergencies. Authorities warned of life-threatening cold lasting up to a week in some regions, with wind chills forecast to fall below minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
