Senegal’s Gueye admits AFCON final walk off was a mistake

Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has admitted that his team’s walk off during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco was a mistake. Speaking on French television, Gueye said the players realised their error and returned to the pitch after leaving in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

The final in Rabat was delayed for about 20 minutes after Senegal walked off following the penalty decision. When play resumed, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the spot kick, before Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time to seal a 1 nil victory for Senegal.

Gueye praised former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane for urging his teammates to return to the pitch, describing his intervention as crucial. He also said he was surprised by Diaz’s attempted Panenka penalty, while confirming that the Moroccan Football Federation has referred the incident to the Confederation of African Football and FIFA.
