Burkina Faso Junta Dissolves All Political Parties

Burkina Faso’s military led government has dissolved all political parties in the country, issuing a decree approved by the council of ministers on Thursday. The decision follows the suspension of party activities after a series of military coups and comes amid a broader crackdown on dissent.

The Interior Minister, Emile Zerbo, said a government review found that the proliferation of political parties had fuelled divisions and weakened social cohesion. He said the move was part of efforts to rebuild the state, adding that all political parties and formations have now been disbanded and their assets transferred to the state.

Burkina Faso is led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in September 2022, months after an earlier coup removed President Roch Marc Kabore. Before the coups, the country had more than 100 registered political parties, while the military government has since cut ties with France and strengthened security cooperation with Russia and neighbouring Mali and Niger.
