The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, says it has cancelled the Monday sit-at-home across the south-east with immediate effect, following a directive from its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement issued on Sunday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, urged residents to return to work, reopen markets and send their children to school without fear from Monday, February 9, 2026.
The sit-at-home was introduced in 2021 to protest Mr Kanu’s arrest, extradition from Kenya and ongoing trial on terrorism-related charges. Initially linked to his court appearances, it later became a weekly exercise, often enforced violently, leading to economic losses, school closures and repeated calls by state governments for residents to ignore the order.

Mr Powerful warned that anyone attempting to enforce a sit-at-home going forward would be acting against Mr Kanu’s directive. He said there was no longer any justification for residents to stay indoors on Mondays and called on people across the region to go about their lawful activities, saying the era of the Monday sit-at-home is over.
