Ogun State reaffirms jurisdiction over oil bearing Eba Island

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed that Eba Island, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the resumption of drilling at an abandoned oil well, is located within Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state. It described claims from some quarters in Ondo State as misleading and capable of creating unnecessary tension.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said constitutionally recognised boundary records from the National Boundary Commission clearly place Eba Island in Ogun State. He explained that while another smaller settlement called Eba exists near Ondo State’s forest reserve, the oil bearing Eba Island lies entirely within Ogun’s coastal corridor.

Mr Akinmade added that due diligence by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and other federal agencies confirmed Ogun State’s jurisdiction before drilling approval was granted. He cited historical records, survey documents, INEC registration details and recent geospatial verification as evidence, while calling for restraint and responsible engagement to preserve peace and cooperation between both states.
