Police officer, four others killed in Benue attack

A police officer and four civilians have been killed in an attack by suspected armed bandits on Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The Benue State Police Command said the incident occurred on Tuesday, amid renewed violence in the North Central state.

The police spokesman, Udeme Edet, said an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the 13 Police Mobile Force in Makurdi was fatally injured during the assault, while four members of the community also lost their lives. He said the Divisional Police Officer in Jato Aka received a distress call reporting that the attackers had targeted both police personnel and residents of the area.

Mr Edet said a combined team of police operatives and other security agencies has been deployed to Abande community to secure the area, conduct searches and prevent further breakdown of law and order. He added that the bodies of the victims have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, has sent the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations to the area and assured residents that efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
