Lagos bans unapproved chieftaincy titles, warns of arrests, prosecution

The Lagos State Government has warned residents against assuming chieftaincy titles without official approval, saying offenders will be arrested and prosecuted. The warning is contained in a public notice issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Bolaji Robert.

Mr Robert said the growing trend of self-acclaimed traditional rulers has caused tension, confusion and unnecessary crises across the state. He described the situation as unhealthy and said urgent action was required to restore order and uphold the integrity of traditional institutions.

The commissioner said the assumption of chieftaincy titles or appellations equivalent to those of an Oba, including the use of titles such as His Royal Majesty or His Royal Highness, without approval, contravenes the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos State 2015. He stressed that the governor is the only authority empowered to approve chieftaincy matters through the relevant ministry.

He added that any chieftaincy title conferred without the governor’s approval is null and void, warning that violators will be prosecuted. Under the law, offenders face up to two years imprisonment upon conviction, as the state government moves to enforce compliance and prevent further crises.
