Kaduna to remodel Ahmadu Bello Stadium, to increase capacity to 32,000

The Kaduna State Government has announced plans to remodel the Ahmadu Bello Stadium to make it the second most spacious sports arena in Nigeria. Governor Uba Sani revealed the project on Tuesday while hosting Phillip Shuaibu, director general of the National Institute for Sports, at the Kaduna Government House.

The stadium, built in 1965, currently seats 16,000 and has hosted national team matches and two FIFA tournaments, including the 1999 under-20 World Cup and the 2009 under-17 World Cup. The upgrade will increase its capacity to 32,000 seats.

The expansion will place it behind Abuja’s Moshood Abiola Stadium, which holds over 60,000 spectators, while Lagos National Stadium and Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Rivers State remain larger than the planned Kaduna facility.

Ahmadu Bello Stadium had been under federal government management until it was handed over to Kaduna State in 2023, marking the state’s first major investment in modernising the historic venue.
