Jonathan, Obasanjo Call For Greater Youth Leadership In Africa

Former Nigerian leaders have called for greater inclusion of young people in top governance roles across Africa. They spoke at a memorial lecture marking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan urged African nations to prioritise individuals between the ages of 25 and 50 for leadership positions. He cited their energy and mental sharpness, and called for further reduction of age barriers for political office, building on Nigeria’s “Not Too Young to Run” reforms.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo reflected on leadership succession, saying one of Murtala Muhammed’s greatest achievements was preparing a successor. He added that subsequent leaders had not done enough to build enduring successors.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, also stressed the need for strong values, dignity and confidence in shaping Africa’s future. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said leadership is defined more by ideas than by physical age.
