The Presidency has clarified that Kayode Egbetokun was not sacked, but resigned from his position as the Inspector General of Police. His resignation comes after his tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Tinubu.
Egbetokun reportedly submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing personal family reasons for his decision. The development was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The outgoing police chief was initially appointed in 2023 before having his tenure extended by President Tinubu. With this, the president has also approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

This appointment suggests that all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police will be forced to resign from service as the acting IG’s appointment takes immediate effect.
