Federal High Court Rejects Libel Action Linked to OPL 245 Dispute

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a libel suit filed by anti-corruption campaigner Kola Suraju against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke.

Suraju had accused Adoke of making defamatory statements against him in relation to the long-running dispute over OPL 245. He was previously charged with cybercrime after being accused of spreading false information against the former AGF. The prosecution eventually withdrew the case.

Suraju asked the court to award damages and grant relief over the alleged injury to his reputation. However, in its judgment, the court held that Suraju failed to establish sufficient grounds to sustain the defamation claim. The judge ruled that the action could not proceed and accordingly dismissed the suit.

Adoke has previously faced multiple legal proceedings tied to the OPL 245 deal and has secured court victories in several of them. The dismissal of this libel case marks another legal win for the former minister. There was no immediate indication from Suraju’s legal team on whether an appeal would be filed.
