The United States and Venezuela have agreed to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations, eight years after Washington closed its embassy in Caracas. The announcement follows the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces in January.
US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Venezuela’s interim president Delcy RodrÃguez said both countries will work together to promote stability, economic recovery, and political reconciliation. The US has also appointed a new diplomat to Caracas.
Since Maduro’s seizure, Washington has allowed Venezuela to sell sanctioned oil under US oversight and opened the door for foreign investment in the country’s oil and mining sectors. RodrÃguez and Burgum said the two countries will collaborate on developing Venezuela’s mineral resources.

The US State Department emphasised that its engagement aims to create conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government. Maduro is due to stand trial in the US later this month on allegations of weapons and drug offences.
