Rising Poverty Reflects Tinubu’s Economic Policies ADC Says

Gombe Opposition Coalition Adopts ADC Ahead of 2027 Polls

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, says recent reports showing Nigeria’s poverty rate at 63 percent reflect the economic record of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The opposition party says the figure rose following the removal of the petrol subsidy three years ago.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said rising fuel and transport costs have driven up the price of food and other basic necessities, worsening hardship for many Nigerians.

The party said the report was presented at a policy dialogue in Abuja on Thursday and indicated that poverty levels increased from about 50 percent before the subsidy removal to 63 percent afterwards. It said the change reflects the impact of higher living costs across the economy.

The ADC also questioned the government’s position that savings from the subsidy removal would be redirected to sectors such as health and education. The party said Nigerians are yet to see significant improvements in those areas.
