Four crew members have been confirmed dead after a United States military refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq. The US Central Command said the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker went down at about 2 pm Eastern Time on March 12 during operations in the region.
Military officials say four of the six crew members on board the aircraft were killed, while rescue efforts for the remaining personnel continued. The crash occurred in a remote desert area in western Iraq.
The US military said the incident was not caused by hostile or friendly fire. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause, although US Air Force officials say a possible mid-air collision is being considered.

The accident marks the fourth loss of a manned aircraft since the United States launched Operation Epic Fury in late February. Earlier this month, three F-15E Strike Eagle jets were downed in a friendly fire incident involving Kuwaiti F-A-18 Hornet aircraft.
