The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says petrol prices have risen nearly 500 percent since President Bola Tinubu took office. The party also claims Nigeria’s poverty rate has jumped from 50 percent to 63 percent following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The ADC says surveys show many Nigerians feel the country is moving in the wrong direction. Most citizens report struggling to afford basic needs, including food, medical care, clean water, and cash income, while the economy is widely described as poor.
Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, stated that petrol prices reportedly rose from about N255 per litre when the Tinubu administration first took office to around N1,500 per litre in many areas. The party says the increase has driven up transportation costs and food prices, raising questions about how the government’s reported N6.4 trillion subsidy savings are being used.

The ADC also highlighted concerns in agriculture, noting the closure of nearly 90 rice mills and a rise in the country’s food import bill from N3.83 trillion to N7.65 trillion. The party says reforms must focus on improving living conditions or risk widening the gap between official claims and citizens’ realities.
