Nigerian footballer stabbed in Lithuania in suspected racist attack

A Nigerian footballer, Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, has been hospitalised after a knife attack in Lithuania, in what authorities describe as a suspected racist incident. The 20-year-old was attacked on Tuesday in Alytus, where his club FK Dainava is based.

The Lithuanian Football Federation says the suspect is in police custody and has condemned the attack as a manifestation of racism. The incident happened as the team was preparing to travel for a league match against Tauras, which has now been postponed.

Federation president Edgaras Stankevičius said racism has no place in football or society and stressed that players must feel safe regardless of their nationality or background.

Obi joined FK Dainava in February 2025 and recently featured in a league match at the weekend. The attack is the latest involving Nigerian players in Europe, following recent cases of racial abuse.
