Nigeria Receives First Batch of HIV Prevention Injections

Nigeria has received 11,520 doses of the long-acting HIV prevention injection, lenacapavir, as part of a global rollout programme. The consignment was delivered on Wednesday to the Federal Central Stores in Oshodi, Lagos.

The delivery forms part of a total of 52,000 doses expected in three batches under a Global Fund-supported initiative. Nigeria is among nine countries selected for the early introduction of the drug, with additional shipments scheduled for May and October.

Officials say the injection will be provided free of charge to selected groups, including people at high risk of HIV infection. The programme will be piloted in eight states, including Kwara, Gombe, Ebonyi, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Benue, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

The National AIDS and STIs Control Programme says distribution to designated health facilities will begin next week. Health authorities say the new drug is expected to help reduce new infections and support efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030.
