FIFA has mandated that all teams participating in its women’s competitions must appoint at least one female coach. The decision was approved by the FIFA Council, chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as part of efforts to increase female representation in coaching roles across global football.
FIFA said the new rule will apply to all its women’s tournaments, including youth and senior competitions. According to the governing body, each team must include at least one female head coach or assistant coach on the technical bench during matches.
Jill Ellis, FIFA’s Chief Football Officer, said the policy is designed to address the underrepresentation of women in coaching positions. She explained that the initiative is part of broader efforts to create pathways and opportunities for women in football at all levels.

FIFA added that it will support the policy with expanded coaching development programmes and licensing opportunities. The organisation said the measure is aimed at promoting inclusion and strengthening the long term growth of the women’s game globally.
