Chad threatens to retaliate after Sudan drone strike kills 17 mourners

Idriss Mahamat Déby has warned that Chad will retaliate after a drone strike killed at least 17 people attending a funeral in the border town of Tiné. He convened an emergency security meeting and ordered the military to remain on high alert.

The president described the attack as a blatant aggression against Chad’s territorial integrity and directed the closure of the country’s border with Sudan, citing repeated incursions and growing security concerns along the frontier.

The attack, which also left several others injured, has been condemned by government officials and lawmakers, who say Chad is prepared to defend itself and respond to further threats in line with international law.

The incident has heightened tensions in the region, with blame exchanged between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, amid an ongoing civil war that has displaced millions and raised fears of wider regional escalation.
