Actor, Okunnu Questions Rising Petrol Prices

Nigerian actor Wale Akorede, popularly called Okunnu, has criticised petroleum marketers over the recent increase in petrol prices across the country. In a video posted on Instagram, he said the price of petrol rose from ₦1240 per litre on 21 March to ₦1340 per litre the following day, and questioned who was responsible for the hike.

The actor also questioned why petrol remains expensive in Nigeria despite its status as an oil-producing nation. He dismissed the ongoing Middle East conflict as a sufficient reason for the increase and suggested that Nigerians themselves may be contributing to the problem.

Okunnu expressed concern about the impact of rising fuel costs on low-income earners, particularly commercial motorcycle operators, warning that higher transport costs could worsen living conditions. He said the situation may make it more difficult for many Nigerians to afford basic needs.

The comments come as Nigeria records a 39.5 percent increase in petrol prices, linked to supply disruptions from the Middle East crisis. Petrol prices have risen to as high as ₦1200 per litre in some areas, leading to higher transport fares across major routes.
